Should you shake Instax film ?
No, Don’t shake the Instax film while it is developing. In case of Instax film, the result can be little blurred. Some time you might not see on the blank eye.
But if you can see, you would notice the yellow color on the edge. Actually the Instax film is designed doing the whole thing automatically. So you don’t need to do anything even shaking the film.
Shaking the film could destroy the chemical of the film that form the picture, because the chemical start their work after taken out the film from the camera.
Another thing is that don’t touch the film inside around while it is developing the picture. Minority of time, it could cause of a little spot.
So Definitely don’t shake the film and enjoy watching live developing picture.
How to avoid fading — Instax film shooting?
Don’t shake the film- Don’t shake the film while developing. You don’t need to do it. The chemicals of the film has the proper function to self-develop. Just wait for 1 or 2 minutes. After that, you can see the live result.
Anyway the actual time of developing the film is 10 minutes for fully developed. I mean the process of film-chemical take 10 minutes to finish its work. Although you get the visual result within one or two minutes, don’t do anything with the film before 10 minutes to save for long lasting.
I have another paragraph to details on why don’t you need to shake the film in this article with example.
Fill-in Flash- It is recommended that you press the camera’s fill-in flash button when shooting a subject under backlit or outdoor, shady conditions that would otherwise result in an excessively dark photo.
What to do after Exposure –
-
- Always hold the photo by the edges after it has been ejected from the camera. By doing this you can get rid of yellow color or white spot which is the main reason of fading after long time.
-
- Do not leave the photo under direct sunlight while the image is still emerging. Any kind of high light like X-Ray or too much light-condition harmful for Instax film or Polaroid film. Too much Light is the main reason to ruin or fading the film.
- Do not bend, fold, or put pressure on the photo. This may cause unevenness in the photo. That’s why the film get some fade after long time. Long time meaning after 20 years or 30 years.
Still have left-film inside & want to re-shoot it ?– Should you leave a film pack or loaded camera in a very hot or cold place? Wait until the film or camera returns to normal temperature before using it.
The quality of the final photo may be affected if you expose the film while it is still hot or cold. Waiting for getting back normal mode or temperature, you can avoid film-fading or overexposed.
Avoid direct sunlight- As I said before, Too much light is the main reason of fading Instax film. Avoid opening a film pack or loading a camera under direct sunlight.
After opening the film, do not leave it in a bright place. Load it into the camera as soon as possible.
Wait for 10 second till fully developed- Upon ejection from the camera, the film immediately begins to self-develop. The processing fluid in the film will be slightly caustic for about ten minutes. Avoid skin contact with this processing fluid during this time.
Don’t touch anywhere into the film except edge before 10 minutes. If you do, it might cause getting white spot or yellow color.
Get perfect shot before film expired- Photographic properties may change with time. Make sure to use the film before the expiration date on the package to avoid some fading situation.
Although you can use the film even after 10 years expiration time. I have discussed this below in dept with many example film shooting.
Film Fogging fact- Film fogging may occur in hospitals, factories, laboratories and other locations using X-rays. Keep films away from radiation sources. Therefore, you can avoid fading and film overexposed.
By doing these basic step, you can avoid fading the film & overexposed.
Does Instax film work with polaroid Camera ?
Yes, you can use any Instax film with Polaroid Camera OR any Polaroid film with Instax Camera. Just make sure you bought the same size of film for the Camera. Say, you have Instant Polaroid 300, then you need to use Instax Mini film for taking shot. Because it’s contain the same size 54(W) x 86(H) film.
What I want to say that If you can match the size of the film, then you would be able to use any film in any Polaroid or Instax Camera. So first know the size of the film then you use them into Cameras.
As all film made by same manufacturer and same size of film, so you don’t need to be hesitate to use it.
How Long Does Instax Film last ?
You can say that the Instax film or Polaroid film can last forever. Why ? let’s get the details…
Both Fujifilm Instax and Polaroid films have the same storage qualities – they won’t fade as long as you store them properly. If your Polaroids are fading then you aren’t storing them right, so if you store your Instax’s like that, it’ll probably fade.
If you were referring to some of the “experimental” Polaroid films like TZ Artistic, Fade to Black, and the Impossible Films, etc. Then that is completely different, as those are experimental films and may not be “stable”. IE: They don’t FADE but they CHANGE – as in they can continue to develop, for example.
If you store any photo in the run conditions (eg direct sunlight), it will fade.
Short Answer: No, they shouldn’t fade if you use common sense.
For example One person have 30 years old polaroid it didn’t fade. The film would last more in case of Instax film, because Instax film is more better in quality.
Actually It would not fade a little that’s mean It would last long with you as new. I like the quality of Instax and Polaroid film.
Fujifilm has a better formula so you definitely won’t have to worry about saving the film. Just store it properly.
do Instax film fade in the sun ? answer is Yes. So keep it safe. First one or two month can’t affect form sun light. So in case of very first month, the sun can not fade the film.
How to store Instax film the right way : last forever
Don’t hang them on the wall in a sunny room. The coatings you may have heard of are probably just UV coatings designed to protect prints hanging in rooms receiving sunlight. Such coatings are offered on “archival” glass used by museums and galleries, but it is expensive. Prints stored in acid-free boxes or albums will last longer than prints on a wall receiving sunlight no matter what coating is on it.
Acid-free archival albums are generally available at any store that sells cameras or photographic prints. I do believe you can also order plastic sheets for archival albums that fit this size Polaroid, although it’s been years since I looked at ordering them. Here is the best way to preserve instax or polaroid film—-
Storing unused Instax film — Film Storage
It might possible, you bought a pack of Instax film, and want to shoot later. So if you think you would shot after long time, then you can store the film also before shooting and protect for a long time even after expiration.
-
- For long-term storage, keep film in a refrigerator (at a temperature below 10°C). Place opened film packs into polyethylene or vinyl bags before refrigerating them.
-
- Protect from high temperature- Optimal temperature is 5 to 40 degrees Celsius. The film doesn’t do well in high temperature or high humidity.
- After removing film from a refrigerator, you should wait (at least 12 hours) for it to reach room temperature before opening it. If you open the film while it is still cold, it may be adversely affected by condensation.
Film Temperature at Time of Use
-
- This film is engineered for optimum performance at 25°C, but will deliver good results when used within a temperature range of 5°C to 40°C.
- When exposing at 5°C or below, place the photo into your pocket immediately after it has been ejected from the camera to keep it warm. Take care not to bend or fold the photo at this time.
Storing used Instax film : Photo Storage
-
- Avoid sunlight, moisture ( high humidity), and high temperature.
-
- Oil and dirt can damage or smudge your photos. So hold them by their corners with clean hands.
-
- You can store long time your images to let them for some days.
-
- Don’t use Magnetic album. If an album smells strongly of chemicals, do not use that album.
-
- Don’t try to cut the image.
-
- Dark storage can prevent fading. Unfortunately the light area can look same faddy if you don’t store it properly.
-
- Don’t try to fold them otherwise the film will get some yellow. I recommend storing it flat.
-
- Always store them in acid-free photo boxes, enclosures, and albums so that it stay safe.
-
- UV light must destroy your film. So keep away your film from UV light.
-
- If you don’t want to stable your film chemistry remain stable so that your photos achieve and retain the best color, contrast and detail for as long as possible, Proper storage can ensure that.
- Avoid Strong Light and harmful gases- The quality of finished photos will change during storage if exposed to strong light, high temperatures, and high humidity. Photos are also affected by exposure to certain gases. For optimum preservation during long-term storage, keep photos in a dark, dry and well-ventilated location away from harmful gases.
- Use empty Instax film pack as a holder of your Instax photos. It can be use as alternative of Instax photo album.
- A 10-shot box will easily hold 20 exposed pictures. You can put the films in the film pack while shooting.

How Instax film Works ?
Unlike other traditional photography, Instax film has all it needs inside itself. This is why the film is more expensive than the standard film. The Instax film has its own need for Photographic paper, chemicals and a darkroom or a professional printer. It’s a lot hah!
An instant photograph is produced when an image is projected onto a film substrate that already contains the chemicals required to develop the photograph; it’s like a mini darkroom. There are a number of different chemicals used depending on the manufacturer and the type of photograph (e.g. color or black and white), but the film generally contains the same three components: a positive sheet, a negative sheet and the chemicals, which are usually enclosed in one of the sheets in a pod. In those early-days Polaroids, they were at the thick end of the final photograph — where most people wrote down what was in the image.
Once the image is taken, the film is passed through rollers that simultaneously break open the pod containing the chemicals and press the sheets together. The chemicals are spread throughout the film, and the image develops in about one minute. Older Polaroids required that the user apply a coating after the film develops, but the book Storing, Handling and Preserving Polaroid Photographs mentions coating the photo with a type of lacquer to minimize oxygen exposure even with “coaterless” film. Since that book hasn’t been updated since 1983, however, it’s best to leave the coating off. Source : Frame Destination
Cay you take the Instax film with you airport ?
I know some of you have some concerns about going through the airports. If you do have that concern, I would recommend if you do have instant film or any type of film. Take it with you to your hand checked with security and saying that I’ve been to many airports and taking my Instax film without any major issues at all with any x-rays getting into the exposure of that.
Travelling with Instax film
At First, don’t put your film in luggage that gets checked. The X-Ray machine is very harmful for Instax film. If they do check with X-Ray, It would leave weird streaks throughout your film. So never put film in your checked bags.
So, you have to remember that the Instax film cannot be put through any x-ray machine, and it must be hand checked.
For fuji guys, I mean who have pack of film, I highly suggest taking it out of the box and ot o the silver wrapping as if you don’t. Because the TSA might do it themselves which could cause you to miss your flight depending on how long they take.
X-Ray machine can fog any Instax film or Polaroid film. So don’t blame the film company to be very muddied in your film photos.
When you travel internationally, keep little more time for airport security to hand check and use your best judgement, because every situation will be different.
I always recommend having it hand checked after it is exposed, and prior to exposing it is fine. When in doubt, ask for a hand check.
Carry a sharpie in your camera bags and writhe in big, bold, black letters the ISO that you shot it at. That way TSA sees it says 1600/3200/6400.
Does expired instax film still work ?
– YES ! it most certainly can
Depending on how you store your film, you can get a lot longer shelf life than what the box says.
I’ve used expired Instax film ranging from a few months to 3 years out of date. Most of the time the photos have come out fine; you wouldn’t even know that it was expired film. Then I’ve also taken some photos that developed a little more white washed or faded looking, but the washed out colours on the film actually looked rather nice. They were still full of colour they just weren’t as saturated as the fresh stuff.
As the photos were taken outdoors in the sunshine it didn’t make too much of a difference on the developed picture anyway, it just added a slight filter on them. Instant Instagram picture anybody?
If you store your Instax, Polaroid or even regular 35mm film in a cool dark place then you should be fine to get a few extra years out of it; it’s dependant on the conditions of the environment it kept in. We store our film in a box in the cupboard of our hallway where there is no working light and the sun doesn’t reach that park of the house.
I’ve not had any issues in the past with any of the expired film I’ve used. I’ve read people using film that was 5 years old and still getting results. Any longer than that and it could be starting to push it, but you never know unless you try !
Some people like to keep their film in containers in their refrigerator to maximize the life of the film but I haven’t ever felt the need as it’s not that hot where we live & I just make sure I’ve stored my film away out of the heat and sun.
These pics were taken this year on new years day that had expiry date of Nov ’13.
These days the film we buy is used up well before the expiry date but if we do come across some that’s expired we will still be shooting with it. So if you ever do have some film that is about to expire or already is, don’t throw it out! It could still be perfectly fine to use. Source: noonut
Result of Expired Instax film
You can take photos with anything you want! Including expired film!
Yes, technically you can; from an actual results perspective your mileage will vary. As other respondents have indicated expired film is available from multiple sources, Lomography probably been the most prominent.
Film is basically a chemical concoction that is unstable over a longish period of time, practically this means that within a particular defined time window (up to the expiry date) you will get very predictable results. After the expiry date however the results will less predictable and this randomness will increase the further past the expiry date that you are.
Sometimes the randomness is exactly what people are looking for… Give it a go; it’s not my personal cup-of-tea but I’m not willing to judge.
What should you expect with expired Instax or Polaroid film ?
As I said that it would sort of depend on how long ago it expired, how it was kept and how poor a picture are you prepared to accept?
Things like photo emulsions and light sensitive materials degrade over time but do not go instantly bad at expiration. They just get poorer. Heat makes it go bad faster.
The first things that happen will be an overall darkening, and wash out of colors.
The effects will appear worse as the film ages.
Still you can take photos for years after most films have expired usually if kept at room temperature, longer if refrigerated. If you are willing to accept some degradation.
You can take pictures with expired Polaroid or Instax films .. but you can’t try a specific effect , expired films give you an antique look and the texture is beautiful , bracketing is good when you take a photo with a expired film . Try shooting in optimal lighting conditions when you are shooting with a expired film
Get out there and shoot! Try new things, screw up a bit, destroy some old rolls, overexpose, underexpose, inhale some chemicals you probably shouldn’t, smell like rotten eggs, and learn the art of film photography!
Guide To Shooting Expired Instax Film
I know girl named Amanda who is very excited to shoot with expired film. That thought encourage me very much.
She always try to adventure with different kind of film and the result of research with expired film is exciting.
She took shot with film in 2017 or 2018 that are expired since 2009 or 2010. How great hah !
She found out the mini film did much better than any other film, but every expiration films worked well.
Here you can see the mini film result that expired in 2009.
Using expired film can be risky. You win some, you lose some. You can see the 2 of the 3 films win the result and other didn’t. So the result are predictable.
Now Let’s get dive into wide film that expired in 2010, and the good news is it is also predictable too.
Here is what happened after taking some shot.
It worked although. To get the full guide, you can visit to Amanda’s blog: believeinfilm
But the result are very predictable and nice if the film expiration date is less 6 years.
It would seem, because of the relatively weak chemical protection layer on the surface of photo-cards, and because of the heaps of warnings on the box, such as the strictest isolation of X-rays, humidity and temperature changes and other damage, already a little overdue film does not operate.
In order to assure you that this is not so, bought the film, that expired 5 years ago. The result was delicious!
For those who have ever shot with a Fuji Instax, is known problem of large number of white spots in cloudy weather, and not a very good white balance.
So, – 5 year overdue gives the film much more interesting white balance, which you can watch here. We can also match a complete lack of color change, which is certainly a plus for expired film.
Thus, the expired Instax Fujii film is no less favorable material for instant capturing moments of your life! source: expired & Instax
Also glad to tell you about the trick:
- Insert the tape into the camera, remove the protective card, remove
- the tape from the camera and put it into the light.
- After 10 minutes, insert the cassette into the camera and shoot!
- You will get the first frame, of course, nothing.
- With the second shot you will get the passing deep into the pink frame,
- And with the third – shot in a slightly blue tone.
Can Instax Film Taken Out ?
What happens when you take the film cartridge taken out of the Instax camera when there is still have some film left in it ?
It will ruin your two or three film in the cartridge. First, when you put the cartridge back to your camera, the first shot will blank. Second, One or Two film could be ruined after that.
Now get into the details….
At first when you take the film out of the camera, It will already destroy the first film of the cartridge. Why ? because of the surrounding light.
Light is the Main reason to destroy any film whether the normal light or the UV light. If you really want to save maximum of your film, then do it into dark situation. That’s mean you can save film just only changing the light situation.
So how do you do it ? you can turn off the light or use blanket or pillow cover. After covering from the light, then you can keep out of the film from the camera.
By doing this, you can prevent the film ruining. The light can not hit the film and you are safe.
Now at least one of your film must get ruin. Why ?
When you put the film cartridge back on the Camera, the camera will count the film from the beginning. As a result the Instax Camera will think that you have put the new cartridge, and it will start thinking that the first film is the DarkSlide. So it would not take the shot and the result would get blank.
It will also count the film from the beginning number from 10 to 0. Whether the camera have any number of film. So don’t think that the camera have 10 film.
If you take out he Instax film at the light room, It would destroy your most of film. As a result, you might not get great result some of them.
Another thing is that if you just open the Instax camera film door accidentally, then what will happen ?
Luckily you would not ruin your first film as long as you taken out the cartridge, and at least one of your film will be destroyed. But if you open your camera film door in the light, then your first one or two film result could be overexposed. That is one of the reason you might get the overexposed output of Instax Camera.
What to do if you really want to save all the film of cartridge
Sometimes, there is a need to pull a partially used film pack cartridge out of a Instax camera. It might because the camera is having an issue, or you need to move the unused film to another camera.
Here is you can do to remove it without ruining it….
-
- Use Zero lightroom and pull the cartridge put to put in a black bag or the other camera.
-
- You have to accept that one of your top film will be wasted, because the camera will start auto ejects the top of the image as a dark slide.
-
- So to save the top film also, you need to insert the black card or dark slide in the camera. It can be tricky to get the card over the upper most unused photo frame.
- By placing the dark slide, you can save every film of the cartridge. the cartridge can be removed without losing the use of a photo
I recommended not to try this own without helping expert. Because It is possible you might get ruin all film.
Can you cut Instax Film ?
No, you should not cut the film. Because by cutting the film you literally destroy the durability of film.
Naturally a film can last of your lifetime if you store it properly, and if you cut the film you would see the film get faded significantly. But it would not happen instantly, it may take 10 or 20 years. Yea it’s a lot also.
If you can the photos, it wouldn’t came apart. Cutting the film, you simply just mess up with the chemical or material. This material or chemical help lasting the film longer time.
How much is Instax film Toxic ?
According to the Instax information, there have some precaution regarding to film using.
In short the answer is it is not harmful as much as you think if you know what to avoid. Here is the details you should know……
First, Don’t put Instax film in your mouth or pets mouth while the film begins to developing.
Do not put your instax film in the mouth. It is highly advised not to do it. So you have to take special care to keep your film away from small children or pets at least 10 minutes. You might use your film roughly after 10 minutes develop.
Because, Upon ejection from the camera, the film immediately begins to self-develop. The processing fluid in the film will be slightly caustic for about ten minutes. Avoid skin contact with this processing fluid during this time.
Second, don’t be so curious using the film chemical anywhere your skin.
If you touch the Instax film with your skin, then flush it off immediately with lots of water. Don’t try to get the fluid gets into your mouth or eyes. If you did it then see your doctor would be better.
Third, If you were to slice open a print during that 10-minutes period, then it might possible there might be a danger of chemical burns. You should hold the film by the edge though.
Four, You should not give a Instax film print a child or a pets like dog or cat. Don’t cut the film if you do then wash the hand after using it.
Good News, There is no chance of getting harm by Instax film toxic. Because the whole process happen under the film cover. It might not harmful until you cut it or eat it or get in your eyes.
Dog ate Instax film what to do ?
What happen when your favorite dog ate the Instax film ? It can be any pet like dog or cat.
Don’t worry the film is not going to destroy anyone life. But the chemical can start affecting another different way. So first job is to see the doctor and tell them all about the Instax film. Doctor can give them the antidote of chemical so that you pets or dog can be safe.
The Instax film might be harmful even the dog eat or touch the Instax film until it develop properly. The proper time of developing film is 10 minutes. So never let them touch the film inside till that time. Even you don’t touch the film also.
By touching the film don’t get harm so much, but it can get yellow or white spot to your film.
Scanning Instax tips
Most of the time you want to share your latest physical memory through Internet. Then what to do ? Yes you can scan your Instax picture and share it.
So, what is the best way to scan your Instax pictures? OK there are many way to do so. Let’s talk about this.
OK the first method is through apps. You find lot of apps on IPhone app or Google play store. Just write mobile scanner or phone scanner and you will get so many apps to download. My favorite is Polaroid Scanner.. you can use any scanner soft like cam scanner app which also has great features.
It doesn’t going to ruin your photo, and try not to use flash if possible.
Second option is the scanner. If you want more high quality scans. If your goal with the intention of archiving, sharing or printing, a flatbed scanner is the best option. It will get the original scan from your Polaroid photos.
If you want to buy a scanning adapter to get the best results from your scanner, then see the video how to use them properly. Learn how to scan Instax film right way without Newton Rings.
Here you can learn how to do it in the proper way so that the Instax film won’t ruin while scanning. Here the guy is going to show how to scan the Instax photo without ruining it.
Another way to scan your Instax film is using Digital Camera. You can use the high resolution digital camera to get better quality.
Which apps or scanner or software would be helpful ?
For Instax film, any flatbed, and any software will be good even the canon software that came with your scanner. And you can also use the Polaroid app scanner which is Mobile apps.
Just make sure that you remove as much dust on it as you can before the scan, and don’t use too much sharpen during and after scanning.. it will just make the dust and scratch more visible.
Make sure you don’t apply too much pressure on the Instax film while scanning because it can create newton ring; plastic coating and glass do this many time.
what to do when instax film is stuck ?
FIXING THE FUJI JAMMING ISSUE
It might happen you pull the dark slide out, and it seems stuck or maybe you got the dark slide out, but now the white tabs are stuck, or you ripped it off.
Don’t need to be worry, just be easy because it is a little issue. Just try doing as the video showing to you. Don’t be harsh to your camera like keyboard of computer or mouse that people normally do.
If you look inside your camera’s back door in the middle you’ll notice 2 flat metal springs. These are meant to keep a film pack pressed tightly against the film plane. The plastic back of the Fuji can flex and give way a lot more than the metal of the Polaroid. Too much pressure on the back side of a film pack will make it hard, if not impossible, to actually pull your film out of the camera to develop. And it can cause ripped tabs, lost shots and heartache. If you want details solution to fixing the jamming issues you can visit the instant options and apply step by step.
